Re(STORE)ing - taking something you love and bringing it back to it's former glory.
The mission of this project is to highlight the existing amenities and key areas of opportunities to ENTREPRENEURS, TOURISTS and FAMILIES, in order to Re(STORE) this small river town into the thriving community it once was .
* It's our hope this website encourages locals and those beyond to bring ideas and more importantly ACTION, into the Re(STORE)ing of Louisiana, Missouri.
Founded in 1816, Louisiana, MO, once a hub of production and economic activity, grew to a population of 5,131 in early 1900. With the changing times and fashion; pearl buttons, white gloves and other goods manufactured in Louisiana were no longer needed. In more recent history, Walmart moved in making it difficult for the "mom & pop" stores to compete. Shoe stores, clothing stores, dime stores, hardware stores, and others closed. Larger industries, such as Dundee and Hercules, left or greatly reduced their workforce. Many middle-class families had to move to find work elsewhere.
This slow decline of retailers and industries helped to decrease the population to 3,111 by 2020. Many of the downtown buildings are now empty and in need of repairs.
By promoting what's already here such as our rich history, historical buildings, the beautiful townscape and the possibilities of thriving unique businesses, we can refocus and restore. It's time!
